The International Conference Series on Theoretical and Practical Issues of Built Heritage Conservation, organised in the town of Tuşnad Băi, was launched in 1992 as an International Specialist Training Course in Historic Building Protection, and developed to become an International Conference since 1993. The first 10 sessions were organised annually, and in 2001 the decision was made to transform the event into a biennial one, all being deployed over 6-8 days, usually in March.
The same committee coordinated the organising first 12 edition, its members being part of the Transylvania Trust Foundation, the Transylvanian Historic Building Conservationists’ Society and the Keöpeczi Sebestyén József Association for the Protection of Historic Buildings in Sf. Gheorghe. From 2007 the Transsylvania Nostra Foundation latch on to the organization activity. Organising partners were the National ICOMOS Committees from Romania, Hungary and Germany and the Technical University in Cluj-Napoca.
The outreach of this activity is evidenced by the evolution of the number of participants and diversity of countries represented, thus: |

The discussions at Tuşnad Băi became more and more acknowledged nationally as well as internationally by historic building conservationists. Since 1994 lectures have been printed in proceedings volumes, which are much appreciated by specialists, as they contain information of high scientific level, and they have both theoretic and practical value. The year 1999 marked the issuing of the lecture volume at the beginning of the conference session, and since 2000 the plenary papers and round-table discussions of the conference can be read in the complementary volumes which are presented in their final form at the succeeding conference. Beginning with the 12th edition the organisers conveyed greater mobility to the conference series by organising the sessions yearly – over half as many days – each time in a different town.
