The international conference held in Cluj-Napoca in October 2016 submitted to debate a topic that is as curr ent as it is challenging, i.e. the reconstruction of monuments and sites.
The reserves expressed by certain specialists with regard to any form of reconstruction of a historic building or site emerge first of all from the knowledge that history is not reversible, and that built heritage is irreplaceable. Once lost, it is lost forever, at least in its material form. Leaving aside this radical position, reconstruction may in principle be appropriate in certain exceptional cases. However, two questions arise immediately: which are these exceptional cases
and how should reconstruction be conducted in these cases?
