Résumé:

The article is a story of development, not only concerning an architectural career, but also regarding the public opinion on historic building reconstruction.

The reconstruction of the mosque in Siklós was carried out during the late ‘80s. Its organisational conditions were provided by the still existing classical heritage conservation system, which included the design studios and the well-functioning units of investment and implementation.

The conservation based on traditional ideas recreated the missing elements of the building in such a way as to reflect, both in the used materials and in the structural solutions, the basic ideas of Ottoman architecture, constantly approaching towards cognisance, similarly to the way we reach a circle from a square, the dome from a quadrangular prism, via the octagonal drum.

The reconstruction of the Diósgyőr Castle is represents a different era. The work carried out from the turn of the century until now clearly reflects the evolution of the relationship between historic building conservation and society. The conservation in Diósgyőr was an emblematic creation of the ‘60s. Thus its re-conceptualisation and continuation was a reflection on the alternatives of thinking about reconstruction. The social structure and economic environment that have changed over the past half a century constitute a good basis for analysis regarding the past, present and future of historic building conservation.
