The Institute of History and Theory of Architecture was created in 1971. Teaching built heritage conservation as a subject started within the confines of the Institute. Later on, within the division, a laboratory was organised which was suitable for carrying out tasks in construction diagnostics and, most importantly, capable of determining the physical and chemical properties of masonry structures. Unfortunately the laboratory did not survive for long. As professor Mihály ZÁDOR’s (the organizer of all this) successor I continue his work with a few innovations, mentioned in the present paper. I also mention besides graduate training, the Specialization Programme in Historic Building Conservation, which has been continuous since 1976, and now is reaching the last semester of its 17th cycle, that has also achieved a significant position following the
launch of the pilot class in 1972.
