Rezumat:
Earthen construction is still widely used in the world and some of the existing constructions have great cultural value. These constructions, however, may perform very poorly when subjected to seismic demands, as has been observed in recent earthquakes. In Portugal, earthen construction was also widely used until the mid-20th century. Adobe construction, particularly, was very common in the Aveiro District. At present, there are still many adobe buildings in use – a significant percentage of these buildings, however, are in poor condition and not adequately retrofitted. Knowledge on the behaviour of adobe constructions is fundamental to support the adequate assessment, rehabilitation, and seismic retrofitting of these constructions. In order to contribute to this knowledge, research on the adobe construction of Aveiro District, in Portugal, has been carried out in the last years. This article presents an overview of some of the main studies carried out.
