The present case study follows the conservation history of a significant historic building in Cluj-Napoca, the house where King Matthias I was born. It was in the 19th century that the building officially became the birthplace of King Matthias. The paper focuses on the two important conservations, dictated by “national interests”, of the house that became the centre of attention, without the need for the topic’s exhaustion. Important aspects of the conservations’ evaluation were the laws and international guidelines operated at that time, respectively the previous experiences of leading architects. The goals of the author are to outline a conservation history on the one hand and to understand the causes and circumstances of the interventions on the other hand.
